Iron Dog Race
The Iron Dog Race, in February, where it seems the town doesn’t sleep, and lives off the sweet smell of snow machine exhaust.
At the end of February/beginning of March, we have the Idita-sport event come through, where athletes follow the historical Iditarod trail either by foot, bicycle or skis.
Iditarod Sled Dog Race
One of the largest winter events that comes to McGrath is the Iditarod Sled Dog race that begins the first weekend in March.
During the International Iditarod Sled Dog Race event, the community sure livens up with one of our favorite community fundraisers of the year, The Spring Auction, sponsored by our local Radio Station, KSKO 89.5 FM. There are hilarious prizes and some sweet “OMG” prizes, it is always a guaranteed good time.
On the same day as the Spring Auction, we also have the new annual Museum Dinner, where locals prepare homemade dishes all from their Museum cookbook for others to enjoy.
Kuskokwim Ice Classic
We love to celebrate the return of the flowing river, as every other Alaskan does. We start it off by gambling on the Kuskokwim Ice classic, where we bet on when the ice will break up. There is a tripod on the river, with a string tied to the battery of a clock that will be pulled out after the tripod falls when the ice moves.
Mother’s Day Potluck
To further celebrate the new season, we have a break-up/ Mother’s Day potluck, for ALL to enjoy! Thanks to Benny and Betty Magnuson!
Back to Bluegrass Festival June 29, 30 & July 1, 2018
If you love a good festival, then come and join us for KSKO’s “Back to Bluegrass” Festival, held every summer at the local Anderson Park. It is two-day event with awesome live music, food and crafts from local Alaskans. Some of the best food is sold during Bluegrass by local vendors, and there is usually a Beer Garden, sponsored by Joes Bar; for those old enough to participate. You can dance the night way, hanging out with the locals, enjoying good food and good music, taking advantage of our midnight sun. There is also a community inflatable water park set up at the park, during the summer months, and during this event, so don’t forget to bring your kids swim wear (and yours if you want)!
